Lately, the governments decision on providing additional reservations for backward classes has triggered enormous clamour amongs't the youth community with lots of other student organizations and News channels supporting them.
Let me share my views about it.
Mr A , a guy with 300 rank from merit class, is not able to get a MBBS seat let alone the wish to join his desired college and some one from a backward class from a well to do family gets in with a 6000 rank.Strange huh!!! what about the adage
"there is no shortcut to success" does it still hold true or , lets see the modified one "quota is the shortcut to success" ...or does this ?.
The government believes that socio-economic differences can be solved with the introduction of quotas ,that may hold but only when the student is from a poor family and is not able to afford for basic necessities.
If quota's are given on basis of caste to every Tom,Dick and Harry then i guess it would have impact on the quality of students driving India's top class universities and organizations both goverment and private alike. The view of reservation by the government gives us a feel as if some people are not capable and thus need to be put in a seperate rung where the competition is below the standards, infact taking such a step would undermine the potential of such students. With no caste bias and every one given a chance on basis of merit, would remove the caste based decision making in education.
Benefit can be given to students only on basis of the families earning capacity and nothing else, if someone from a backward class family did not put efforts in their early days when they had an opportunity and thus had be contented with low earning capacity then why tax the students who do not come under any category.
If people dont make use of opportunities then ,and later begin to complain they were not given a chance and re introduce such things, then we are encouraging people to get complacent in their efforts and depend on quota. If a person is willing to work hard and has the confidence in himself, why does he need some seperate race for him, let him compete with others. He is infact proving that he is good for nothin so i need quota .
I believe, that people having access to all facilities viz education , health, recreation, food .should not be given any special quota, even though they come under a backward category.
Quota should be made on basis of ability to get basic necessities, if i put it the other way , the affording capability, than just because someone belongs to a backward caste though he is from a decent family.
If everyone from a self sustaining family begins to claim in the name of castes.Students depending solely merit will have to bear the brunt and thus lose hope in merit.
If the country has to progress in all economic spheres , it has to be through the hands of able people who have a strong foundation of education with hard work and thought in their blood and not aimless and complacent people, with degrees earned through quotas.
Quotas have become " kata's" a kannada word meaning "trouble or menace" .Lets hope for a India free from all bias with merit being the sole decider

Five Point Someone !!!
Sometime back I got a chance to lay my hands on “Five point someone”,
www.fivepointsomeone.com a national best seller authored by IITD, IIMA alumni Chetan Bhagat.
Hats off i should say, for a first time author, a marvelous piece of accomplishment in the field of writing.
The story had such a gripping effect on me, that I quit my rendezvous with the WWE matches on TV and begun watching again, until I had read it twice.
The book crisply explains the rigors at an IIT and the trend of life in there. It surely made me feel worthless looking at the way we studied during our engineering days.
On the contrary it also shook some of my beliefs about the culture at IIT’s Students who Burn two long years with arduous efforts to make it into the IIT’s, pickup a total different lifestyle ,to such an extent to put their career at stake.
Coming back, the book surely has an element of suspense at every stage that entices the reader to ask for more , every dialogue perfected to its best and situations explained down to earth .The influence of the book was so high, that I felt myself as part of the story and present in those wacky, mushy, staid situations .The only other book which had a similar effect on me was Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho.
I am eagerly waiting for the day when the movie based on the lines of 5 point someone would be released. Mr. Bhagat, thank you for bringing out such a wonderful book…..!!
